#1 Alpine Golf and Sports Club

Created originally from flat rice paddy fields to a hilly and undulating layout, Alpine Golf Club is Thailand’s one of finest golf courses with over 3 years of proven experience of offering its members a new dimension of golf challenge beyond expectation. The course was designed by one of the world’s most renowned architects Mr. Ron M. Garl. Once he set feet on the 770-rai flat open land of Today’s Alpine Golf Club, the architect’s vision was to build Thailand’s one and only man-made hilly championship golf course. The course designer came up with carrying out the impossible task of building grass-covered hills on the vast flatlands, topped by hundreds of hand-picked trees and refined with high-grade sand. All these were aimed to introduce golfers to many unexpected golf challenges at Alpine Club.

Some of the drives require straight shots to avoid winding up in the jungle lining many of the holes. Finding the often water protected greens is also no easy achievement. For example, the 7th and 11th holes are both played to what in essence are island greens, connected to each other by a small sliver of land. With these relatively small putting surfaces to aim at, one is left mesmerized to discover that Tiger Woods eagled the 555-yard par-5 7th on his way to winning the 2000 Johnnie Walker Classic. Alpine is a layout that will test the best, but also one that is full of wonderfully picturesque holes, lots of lush vegetation and, for the Bangkok area, an extravagance of undulations and earth mounding.

#2 Ayutthaya Golf Club

Ayutthaya Golf Club located in Ayutthaya Province is around 1:30 from Bangkok center. The locally designed and well-maintained course is relatively easy to play with generous fairways and large greens. Outside the playing area is short rough in which balls sit up nicely. The 13th hole is a long 495 yard par-4 and the most challenging on the course. Care should be taken to avoid the water hazard on the left side. The second shot is a long carry to a well-guarded green.

The clubhouse and other facilities are better than most area courses, and the dry sauna in both the men’s and ladies changing rooms is a nice touch usually on reserved for higher priced Thai golf courses. A basic restaurant serves up tasty local and international dishes.

#3 Bangkok Golf Club

The Bangkok Golf Club is one of the best and most popular golf courses in Thailand and was host of the 2003 Volvo Masters. Situated just 35-minutes out of the city, if you are currently in Bangkok and want to play not just a top quality course but a conveniently located one, this is the perfect choice for you.

The course is relatively short, set over approximately 6,800 yards from the back-tees. However, you will have to place your shots to shoot the best round. The course enjoys lots of wildlife such as birds and deer. The woodland style course has some of the fastest greens in Thailand with lots of undulations, so you have been warned. There are a few water hazards and very narrow fairways which means hitting the ball straight is a must.

Bangpakong Riverside Country Club has established in 21 July 1990 as the first golf course in Chacheongsao province areas alongside Bangpakong Rivers which capture its name.

#5 Bangpoo Golf & Sports Club

Image result for Bangpoo Golf & Sports Club

Bangpoo Golf & Sports Club is a good option for the budget conscious golfer who wants to play a round of golf in Bangkok. This course which was designed by Arnold Palmer designed course and is often blessed with the cooling sea breezes make Bangpoo a great choice for a really hot day.

For golfers, ‘The King’ refers not to Elvis Presley but to Arnold Palmer, the first golf superstar and at Bangpoo Golf & Sports Club you can test your golf  on one of the handful of Arnold Palmer designs in Asia and the only golf course in Bangkok which he built. Although close to the sea, you won’t find too many water hazards on the course which will be welcome news to the less able golfer who will find that this is a course where they can score well and not lose too many balls. However when the wind gets up the course can show its teeth so you need to keep your concentration especially when selecting the right club. Unlike many newly opened golf courses which look bare and open due to the lack of mature trees, Bangpoo Golf & Sports Club has been open long enough for the trees to mature, and the wonderful flowers make this course a joy to play.

#6 Bangsai Country Club

bangsai country club green

Originally an 18-hole complex, the club has benefitted from an extra 9 holes being added to create a wonderful 27-hole complex that is both enjoyable and affordable. It is this affordability that has allowed the course to grow into one of the favourites in the region, although still somewhat considered a hidden jewel on the golfing scene of Bangkok.

The course lends itself perfectly to the area and has been cleverly designed to make the most of the splendid vistas, natural terrain and rural location. Thai designer Pirapon Namatra should be highly praised for his attention to detail and the intricateness of his design amongst the rice paddies. Each hole offers a distinctive design with a rolling fairways being perfectly framed by the strategically positioned bunkers and lateral water hazards that come into play on no fewer than 11 holes.

#7 Best Ocean Golf Club

Schmidt and Curley were the designers of the Best Ocean Golf Club, the stimulating course in all of Bangkok. It takes about 40 minutes to access from downtown Bangkok. It is located by the ocean making breezes very common and providing a cooling effect on the course.

The course is interlinked making it a bit of a challenge for beginners and golfers. The course spans 7200 yards and is best suited for the highly experienced golfers. Water can be found on the fairway’s right and left on the majority of the holes. Any wayward shots may also run into trouble caused by the sea breeze.

Raised greens and snug fairways characterize the layout making it necessary to have well-struck drives. For a good score, players need to plan and strategize each shot. Every hole has water while most have a water feature on both the right and left. To succeed here, players need to have precise and straight drives or bring extra balls.

#8 Cascata Golf Club

view of cascata golf club, bangkok, thailand

Cascata Golf Club is an excellent links-style golf course located a little further outside Bangkok which now offers a 72-hole layout and a Scottish style links experience.  Course is in great condition and is a very interesting challenge with generous fairways and numerous water hazards.

The original A and B Courses at Cascata incorporate many open fairways, creating a Scottish links-style experience. Cascata is kept in excellent condition and is an exciting challenge with generous fairways and some of Bangkok’s best greens.

Both A and B Courses are dotted with trees, although the general feel will always be open and expansive, with limited protection from the wind, which can indeed be a factor. The longer A-course introduces players to ever-present water hazards, opening with a short, tightly dog-legging par-4 and then a testing, water-protected par-3 (where an over-sized wine bottle further reinforces the course’s European connections).

#9 Flora Ville Golf & Country Club

Image result for Flora Ville Golf & Country ClubFlora Ville Golf & Country Club is located on Bangkok-Patum Thani Rd., only 3 kilometers from Nuan Chawi Bridge. Is one of only a handful of Nick Faldo designed courses in Bangkok. The course located to the North of Bangkok in Pathum Thani province plays inside a large housing estate. Large stately trees, open marsh areas, and rich wildlife add to the natural golf experience. By Expressway, it will take just 20-25 minutes from the center of Bangkok.

The Course was designed by utilizing natural surroundings to the utmost.Emphasis of this golf course is on enjoyment and strategy, as it offers lakes, bunkers and mounding all designed to enhance the beauty yet offer a challenge to all golfers.

#10 Green Valley Country Club

Related imageGreen Valley Country Club is one the oldest courses on the way from Bangkok to Pattaya.  It is one of three Trent Jones Jr courses in Bangkok, the others being the Navatanee Golf Course and Suvarnabhumi Golf & Country Club. Green Valley laid out on relatively flat terrain makes it easy to walk. The greens are large, fast and undulating with the pins tucked away in some tricky spots. Accurate drives are a must to score well as water flanks most of the fairways. The greens are firm and fast, especially when putting down grain. Green Valley has many well-placed hazards which add further to the golf challenge.

The par-3 14th hole is the signature hole. An island tee requires an accurate shot to hit the green in regulation and secure par. The short par-3 17th is also a  good hole with the 11th and 18th two of the best par 5’s in Bangkok.

#11 Kiarti Thanee Country Club

Image result for kiarti thanee country clubKiarti Thanee Country Club is truly a fun layout for both high handicap and scratch golfers. The course underwent extensive renovation in 2003 and with three tees offering 6,905 yards from the back tees down to only 5,488 yards from the ladies tees, this course is fair to all levels.

Water comes into play on 2/3rds of the holes and in some cases there are a number of parallel fairways, but you’ll unlikely to know it due to the mature trees separating adjacent holes. The entire property is surrounded by water much like a moat and expands into the course playing areas throughout. Additionally, three ponds can come into play on wayward shots. They leave their signature hole to last, with a 462 yard par 5 made even more challenging with a water hazard along the right side of the fairway from tee to green.

#12 Krung Kavee Golf  & Country Club

Image result for Krung Kavee Golf Course & Country Club Estate

The former domestic airport of Don Muang borders Krung Kavee, a golf course located on an expansive private housing estate. This course was constructed under the workmanship of designer Manabu Sakamoto, a world renowned architect whose designs are known to favor long golf courses.

At 7,082 yards the par 72 course is great for the long hitters, as he has created over six par fours running at over 400 yards. However he has also offered four sets of tees giving all level of golfers different playing challenges. Luckily you’ll find about 50% fewer bunkers here than on most courses in the region, and water is hardly an issue, coming into play only on the par three 9th hole which is an island green playing 190 from the blue tees, 85 yards from the front. It is the number 17 handicap hole, meaning it is the second easiest on the course, which is comforting after playing the most difficult, 470-yard par four 8th hole.

The course keeps it green in its maintenance. Utilizing harmful herbicides and pesticides is not tolerated. The drainage on the course is sub-surface meaning that instances of stagnant water even during the heavy rainy season are greatly reduced. The result of these green efforts is that the playing fields are among the best in Bangkok golf courses.

#13 Krungthep Kreetha Sports Club

Image result for Krungthep Kreetha Sports ClubKrungthep Kreetha Sports Club is one of the older Bangkok courses which opened their eighteen holes back in 1969.. and Krungthep has now established itself as one of the well-known golf course in Bangkok. As you start your round, you will encounter a lot of water on this layout, but it is mainly for distraction and should not affect your game unless you have some poor shots.

Mature trees and shrubs line the slightly narrow fairways and luckily there are fewer bunkers than you would normally encounter on this course, although they are well positioned to challenge your driving accuracy. Krungthep is a mere 12 miles from the city centre and therefore is one of the closest 18 holes to reach from Bangkok city centre

#14  Lakewood Country Club

Take the short drive east from Bangkok on the Bangna Trad Highway and you are there before you know it. Lakewood is also only 10 minutes from Suvarnabhumi Airport, so it’s ideal for that last minute round before you catch a night flight home.

J. Michael Golf Design Group from the USA designed and built this Bangkok golf course and seeded the fairways and greens with Tifdwarf Bermuda grass, then installed more than 3,800 water sprinklers to keep it green year round. Four tee boxes on every hole allow players to tee it up according to their handicap skill level for competition or relaxation and recreation. You can count on Lakewood Country Club to be in superb condition every time you play there.

#15 Lakewood Links

Related image

Lakewood Links Golf Course is the second project of its kind promoted by Lakewood Land Co., Ltd. The 7,102-yd championship standard par-72 course has 10 par-4s and four each of par-5s and par-3s. The flagship, Lakewood Country Club, situated next door, is home to the finest 27-hole world-class golf course designed by J. Michael Poellot of USA.

The almost total lack of trees leaves the course very exposed to the prevailing winds.  A very unusual links-style layout with two unique signature par 3s – one in the shape of a starfish and another in the shape of a crab.  The course is very flat an featureless with virtually no trees and it winds its way around the very large lake which dominates the layout.

#16 Lam Luk Ka Country Club

water at lam lukka country club, bangkok, thailand

Lam Lukka Country Club is a 36-hole layout on the outskirts of Bangkok about 90 minutes from downtown. The courses meander through a beautiful wetland of mature trees and tropical plants and wildlife – a real escape from the city. There are two courses here from which to choose, the Championship East Course with A and B nines, and the Resort West Course with C and D nines. Both are well maintained, with an excellent putting surface and a selection of challenging water hazards.

You’ll see lots of water but it is seldom strategic and for the most part he built the greens narrow, less than 20 yards wide or deep with some about half that. You’ll also see some expansive waste bunkers, one of which measures nearly 270 yards in length. Mature trees line the fairways creating not only attractive landscaping but also lots of shade for hot afternoons.

#17  Legacy Golf Club

Legacy Golf Club Bangkok Fairway

The Legacy Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus design and is located next to Safari World in the Minburi area, a very easy 40 minute drive from the city center of Bangkok. This Bangkok golf course is popular with local Thai golfers, members, and visitors alike. Course conditions are good, especially considering the amount of rounds played. At 7,164 yards from the Jack Tees this provides quite a challenge , however there are a choice of five tees so all levels can enjoy this course.

The Legacy Golf Club incorporates all the common Jack Nicklaus design features such as large waste bunkers, wide fairways that favor a fade, and tight approaches to the greens. The largest waste bunker on the course stretches nearly 400 yards long and has an island of rough in one area.

#18 Lotus Valley Golf Resort

clubhouse at lotus valley golf club, bangkok, thailand

Lotus Valley Golf Resort is a superb course original designed by Gary Player but was redesigned and reshaped by John Morrow and Craig Bertram and in is now one the best layouts of any golf course in Bangkok.  Only possible drawback is that it is one of the furthest from the city and as at least one hour from the airport and longer during the rush hour.

The Lotus Valley Golf Resort was originally designed to high standards by South African Gary Player. His preference is for a Scottish experience with close cut fairways and water at most holes. Although the course has been extensively remodelled it still remains at heart a Gary Player design the course has been upgraded to meet the demands of the modern game.  The new design team have reshaped the green complexes and the result is some superb playing conditions and a course which is very challenging, visually beautiful and above all great fun to play.

#19 Muang Kaew Golf Club

aeriel view of muang kaew golf club, bangkok, thailand

A firm favorite with locals and expats, Muang Kaew has a fairly flat 18 hole layout and at first sight looks to be an easy challenge. However don’t be fooled, as American course designers Schmidt and Curley have weaved their magic here and you will enjoy a fun round of golf for sure.

Although tight in places most of the fairways at  Muang Kaew are wide in the landing areas making this course comfortable from the tees. There is little elevation change so you are basically hitting from level lies throughout the round. Many of the greens, however, are slightly elevated which causes them to drain well and dry out a bit, making them hard to hold at times.

Par 3 number 3 is a short hole with a tricky green guarded by water and a couple of deep bunkers. Score well here and your off on the right track. Another hole that gets everybody’s attention is their par five 13th, where you have a blind tee shot over water around a ninety-degree dogleg right and if you hit it over 230 without cutting the corner or fading, you will drive through the fairway. The back nine ends with the deceiving par five 18th hole where any approach shot short and right will have a watery grave.

#20 Muang-Ake Golf Club

Muang Ake Golf Course

This is an ideal second tier golf course in Bangkok for novice and high handicap golfers. It’s not too long and the excellent condition of the fairways allows the ball to be played easily. The fairways tend to be wide with little rough and the greenside bunkers are away from the putting surfaces and not so deep. The greens vary in size and shape with some of them being quite narrow. The speed of the greens is just fast enough. The canal surrounding the course weaves in and around holes, but not in a way that is particularly disturbing to play. For novelty, the 150 and 100 yardage markers are plants shaped like birds and animals.

The clubhouse overlooks the island and peninsular greens of the ninth and eighteenth holes. Muang Ake golf course is not the best Bangkok golf course but if you’re looking for a casual round of golf with no frills at a very cheap price, Muang Ake is ideal.
